Keynote- Damon Carson, Repurposed Materials, Inc.
As founder and President of repurposedMATERIALS, Damon brings a unique, fresh take on the perennially hot topics of sustainability and Zero Waste. The “repurposing” concept will stimulate the creative juices amongst attendees about how to find a 2nd Life for waste. With a “repurposing” presentation, you would be engaged by something light, but still educational, to offset all the technical sessions…ie: the debits/credits lectures, the parts per million discussions, etc.
So, what is “repurposing”? It is taking a retired street sweeper brush and giving it a 2nd life as a backscratcher for horses or cattle. It is taking a decommissioned fire hose and giving it an extended life as a boat dock fender. It is taking an obsolete ski lift cable and giving it a second life as hand railing in a luxury condo building.
Our company – www.repurposedmaterialsinc.com - has helped a number of organizations through “repurposing”: US Army, Denver Broncos, City of Chicago, Nestles, BNSF Railroad, Oklahoma State University, Purina, US National Forest Service, Campbells Soup, State of Wyoming, Paramount Pictures, and many, many more.

Liquid Soap Products/ Manufacturing Tour
Liquid Soap Products, Ltd. specializes in household detergents derived from both virgin and recycled materials. In 2016, we installed a dish soap recovery and plastic recycling preparation line. Dish soap bottles that have been rejected during the filling process are fed into the line and shredded so as to allow separation of dish soap from plastic. The dish soap is refined so it can be reintroduced into the soap making process as a raw material. The plastics are separated by type, ground into a flake, cleaned, dried and bagged so they can be easily recycled. Special Notes for this tour: *No Photographs Allowed *Attendees will be required to sign a Non Disclosure Agreement upon arrival at the facility. Goodwill: Textile Diversion Goodwill's mission is to empower people with disadvantages and different abilities to earn and keep employment through individualized programs and services. The Goodwill Outlet facility in Kansas City, MO processes all of the waste and unsold goods from all of the metro Goodwill locations, which amounts to approximately 4,500 tons a year. The Outlet has been working to reduce waste and diverts at least 80% of their waste stream every year through recycling efforts. This diversion includes toys, metals, cardboard, glass, accessories and much more. Ripple Glass: Glass Recycling An up-close look at Ripple’s state-of-the-art processing plant dedicated to recycling glass containers. Ripple was founded in 2009 by the people at Boulevard Brewing Company to solve the problem of lack of glass recycling and processing in Kansas City Metropolitan area. In the years since, Ripple has expanded throughout the region and now helps over 80 other communities keep glass out of their landfills while giving it the new life it deserves. At the plant you will see the cleaning, drying, sizing, color sorting and screening that goes into annually creating over 40,000 tons of furnace ready cullet. |
Learn how you can build a campaign to advance recycling behavior change Workshop Additional Information
MORA has partnered with the Social Marketing Association of North America to bring you a training about social and behavior change. Multiple disciplines will be discussed but the focus will be on social marketing -- not to be confused with social media marketing like Facebook and Twitter. Social marketing uses commercial marketing principles to influence human behavior for societal good. Behavior change is not easy. If it was, we would all exercise regularly and eat healthy. Even when we know something is the right thing to do, we don’t always do it. We’re human: our actions are influenced by peer pressure, personal motivations and values, convenience, cost, and the list goes on. By understanding how our target audience sees the behavior we are promoting, including the benefits it would bring and any barriers that may stand in the way, we can implement a campaign that is informed and effective. With research and pilot testing, a successful campaign “marketing mix” will include various messages, psychology-based communication tactics, and diverse channels and outreach strategies. Finally, continuously evaluating a social and behavior change campaign is important to make sure it is impactful. This interactive 2 ½ hour training will give you various tools, strategies and case studies to help advance behavior change for social good. Participants will try out some inexpensive research techniques and create an outline of a marketing plan for a topic of their choosing. Following the training will be a free informal Social Marketing of Association Networking Event held off-site if attendees want to stay. |
